Sod installation in Laval, North Shore and Laurentians

Nothing transforms a piece of land as quickly as a well-laid peat. In one day, your yard goes from bare earth or construction site to a dense, even, green lawn. It's one of the most visible and satisfying transformations you can make on the exterior of a property.

But a badly installed peat is a peat that turns yellow, that rises or that never really takes root. At Aménagement DDL, we have been laying sod correctly for more than 10 years in Laval, on the North Shore and in the Laurentians. The preparation of the soil, the quality of the peat and the installation technique: nothing is left to chance.

FOR WHICH PROJECTS

For which projects is peat laid?

Sod installation is applicable to a wide variety of residential situations. We regularly work on the following types of projects in Laval, the North Shore and the Laurentians.

New construction

Your land is bare after the construction work. Peat is the fastest and most effective solution to achieve a dense and clean lawn from the first season. We prepare the soil, level and install the sod so that you can enjoy your yard as soon as possible.

Complete lawn repair

Is your lawn damaged, yellowed, overgrown with weeds or too sparse to be salvageable? A complete rebuilding with new sod is often more cost-effective in the long run than trying to resurrect a lawn in poor condition. The old vegetation is removed, the soil is properly prepared and new quality peat is installed.

After earthworks or excavation work

Earthworks, excavations, or pool installation often leave areas of bare ground around the property. These areas are regrassed to give your land a neat and uniform appearance. We can take care of everything in the same visit, so you don't have to coordinate several contractors.

Expansion of a grassy area

Do you want to extend your existing lawn, transform a gravel area or create a new playground for the children? We install new sod that harmonizes perfectly with your existing lawn in terms of colour and texture.

Re-grassing after pool installation

Installing a pool usually leaves areas of compacted soil or loose soil all around. We regrass these areas with care so that your backyard regains an impeccable appearance as soon as the work is completed.

OUR PROCESS

Our Peat Installation Process

The difference between peat that roots well and peat that is problematic is almost always the preparation of the soil. This is how we work at Aménagement DDL, step by step.

1. Valuation of the land

  1. We analyze your soil in detail: its composition, its level, its compaction zones and its drainage problems. Clay soil, as is often found in Laval, requires a different approach to sandy soil, such as in certain areas of the North Shore or the Laurentians. We adapt our method to your specific reality.

2. Soil preparation

Debris, stones, old roots and weeds are removed. The soil is loosened to the right depth, usually between 10 and 15 cm, to allow the roots to penetrate easily. If the soil is too poor, it is amended with quality topsoil or compost. We then level to eliminate all the hollows and bumps that would cause the water to stagnate.

3. Fresh peat supply

  1. We source fresh peat, grown in Quebec and adapted to our climate. Recently harvested peat that hasn't been stored for too long roots much faster and gives better long-term results. We choose our suppliers for the quality and freshness of their product.

4. Careful installation

The sod is laid in staggered rows, like bricks, to avoid aligned joints that create visible lines and weak spots. Each roller is snug against the previous one to eliminate gaps between sections. We finish with a roller to ensure optimal contact between the peat and the soil underneath.

5. Personalized care tips

  1. Before leaving, we explain how to water your new peat during the first 2 to 3 weeks, which are the most critical period for rooting. We give you advice adapted to your type of soil and the season so that your investment starts off on the right foot.

EXPERTISE

Why soil preparation makes all the difference

We regularly see homeowners in Laval and on the North Shore who have had sod installed by a company that skipped the preparation steps. The result is predictable: the peat looks good for the first two or three weeks, and then it starts to turn yellow, lift in sections, or never really root properly.

The causes are almost always the same: soil that is not decompacted, insufficient topsoil, sloppy levelling or peat stored too long before installation. At Aménagement DDL, we do not compromise on these steps. We take the time to prepare the soil well because we know that this is what determines the final result, and it is our reputation that is at stake with each project.

Expert tip: The first 3 weeks after application are critical. Your new peat should be watered deeply once or twice a day depending on the temperature and sunlight. Insufficient watering is the main cause of failure of new peat moss in Laval and on the North Shore during hot summers.

Frequently asked questions about sod laying

How much does it cost to install sod in Laval or on the North Shore?

The price depends on the area to be covered and the condition of the land. In general, expect to pay between $1.50 and $3 per square foot for peat and installation, depending on the conditions. Soil preparation can influence the cost if additional amendment or levelling work is required. Contact us for a free on-site quote.

When is the best time to lay peat in Quebec?

Peat can be laid from spring to autumn, from May to October. Spring and early fall are ideal because cooler temperatures and natural rainfall reduce watering requirements and promote rooting. Summer is also possible, but more frequent watering is required during periods of intense heat.

How long does it take for peat to take root?

In general, a well-established peat begins to take root in 2 to 3 weeks. After 4 to 6 weeks, it is sufficiently rooted for normal use. Regular watering in the first few weeks is absolutely essential for good rooting, especially during the hot and dry summers in Laval and on the North Shore.

Do you do the design and the plans, or only the execution?

We will assist you in the planning of your layout during the evaluation visit. We advise you on the layout of the elements, the choice of materials and the priorities according to your budget. For complex projects requiring formal architectural plans, you can be referred to the appropriate resources.

Should the soil be prepared before laying peat?

Yes, always. This is the most important step and the most often overlooked by companies looking to move fast. Poorly prepared, compacted or levelled soil will result in peat that does not root well and will quickly become a problem. At Aménagement DDL, soil preparation is an integral part of every sod laying project.

Do you lay sod after construction or excavation work?

Yes, this is one of the most common situations. After excavation, earthwork or pool installation in Laval or on the North Shore, the affected areas are re-grassed to restore your property. Soil preparation and peat laying can be taken care of in the same visit.

What is the difference between peat and seeded grass?

Peat is mature grass that has already been cultivated and is installed in rolls. The result is immediate and the surface is usable in a few weeks. Seeding takes several months to produce a dense, even turf, and is more susceptible to weeds during the germination period. For most homeowners in Laval and on the North Shore who want a quick and reliable result, peat is the best choice.
